Whatever you believe and however you feel about the current situation in the world, you might find yourself carrying a bundle of worries, concerns, and justified fears. I certainly do. It’s crucial for us to engage meaningfully as citizens within our communities, countries, and on a global scale. After all, we cannot rightfully criticize problems without contributing to their solutions. Action is necessary. Yet, amidst all this, caring for our well-being through consistent self-care practices remains essential. This is how we harness our full potential — not only to show up in the world but to show up in a way that truly matters and makes a difference. Remember, if we don’t take care of ourselves first, we’ll find it challenging to effectively care for others. It’s like they say: “you can’t pour from an empty cup”.
As the founder of Eternal Dancers and a dance connection specialist, mentor, and coach in dance passion, I’ve had the privilege of experiencing firsthand — and witnessing — how profound and transformative embodied movement practices can be as a form of self-care. My journey as an advocate for embodied and creative movement and holistic well-being has continually reaffirmed the power these intentional movement practices hold.
Somatic practice involves tuning in to our bodily sensations and allowing those internal experiences to guide our movements. It’s about cultivating an awareness that connects the mind, body, and spirit, enabling us to perceive and respond to our emotional and physiological states with more sensitivity and depth.
Embodied movement builds on this by encouraging dance and movement that honors what your body needs to release, what your soul desires to express, and what your mind craves to let go. It is a holistic, nonjudgmental practice that prioritizes self-expression over what your movement looks like or any specific technique. When I talk about maintaining a daily movement practice, it is not about perfecting moves or how it looks outwardly. It is about embracing your innate rhythm and letting your inner self guide the dance, freeing what needs to be set loose. Through this approach, dance becomes a powerful tool for healing, growth, and self-discovery, allowing us to nurture ourselves so that we can, in turn, better care for the world around us. It is ALL about the expression, feeling and act of giving our bodies time to dance freely and authentically.
So, my proposal to you is simple: whether you’ve never danced a step in your life, or you’re one of those who claims to only dance when no one’s watching, there’s a transformative opportunity waiting for you. Perhaps you’re already dancing up a storm, wonderfully carefree or technically gifted. No matter your level of experience or confidence, integrating a daily self-care practice of just 10 minutes of free movement can begin to change your life in remarkable ways.
Call it dance, somatic practice, or just a fun break; the name matters less than the act itself. This is about giving yourself permission to explore movement without judgment and allowing your body and mind to experience the liberation it brings. Shedding the confines of perfectionism, you open yourself to authenticity, creativity, and your true essence.
In making movement a part of your routine, you not only nurture your own well-being but also become more resilient, focused, and empowered to tackle life’s challenges head-on. This newfound vitality and sense of balance ripple outwards, elevating how you show up for yourself, your loved ones, and your community. By transforming self-care into a joyful habit, you enrich your life and enhance your capacity to contribute meaningfully to the world around you.
